BYRON Pearson, a 67-year-old taxi driver from Mongrippa Hill, Bartica, Region Seven, has been found guilty on two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
The pensioner learned his fate on Friday, when his trial concluded before Magistrate Christel Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
The accident leading to these charges against him occurred on February 16, 2023, at approximately 15:30 hrs, when Pearson, driving motorcar PRR 5669, failed to stop at a ‘stop sign’ and collided with a motorcycle, on the approach to Fifth Street, Bartica.

The accident resulted in the deaths of motorcyclist, 26-year-old Daivd Huggins and his wife, Felicia Lewis, 23, both of Bartica. Pearson was initially charged almost a year ago, on May 15, 2023, and pleaded not guilty at that time. He was released on $600,000 bail pending a trial.
However, after the trial, he was found guilty on both counts and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for each charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
