ICC T20 WORLD CUP…
THE nations that make up the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are working to have collaborative approach as the region prepares to host this year’s International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup tournament.
The tournament is being held in the region and the USA in June.
Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, who spoke at the closing press conference of the Caribbean community, says that while they anticipate some challenges, CARICOM is committed to ensuring the successful hosting of the event.
“Heads have pledged their unwavering support, working with Cricket West Indies to make sure we do all we need to do institutionally, regulatory and legally to facilitate the movement of fans, players and support staff to ensure we have a smooth running of our World Cup.”
Mitchell noted that CARICOM is making certain that fans’ security is a priority throughout the tournament.
“Mass events also pose a significant safety and security risk, and in the geo-political tension around the world, we are keenly aware of the need to ensure that we don’t take this event for granted from a public safety security perspective,” he said.
Meanwhile, CARICOM Chair President Irfaan Ali says they are working towards putting in place a structure that will benefit the region going forward in the area of sport development through competition.
Guyana’s head of state Dr. Ali, coming out of the CARICOM meeting, said discussions on the potential impact of sports were looked at, as they seek to utilise that avenue to aid in the social growth of each member country.
