Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and Public Service, on Monday, announced that the sum of $135.2 billion has been allocated to realize the government’s vision of having a world-class education system here.
The Minister made this disclosure during his presentation of the 2024 National Budget where he noted that in 2023 some $105 billion was spent by the sector in various areas.
This year, he said that the construction will commence on several primary schools in various areas across the country and as such the sum of $3.1 billion has been set aside to advance those works.
Added to that, some $16 billion has been allocated for the construction and works on secondary schools across the country while some $3 billion has been allocated for nursery school buildings.
As the government intends to improve education infrastructure this year, Dr Singh stated that $28.7 billion has been set aside for schools, buildings and education facilities.
Meanwhile, he indicated that the distribution of the Because We Care and Uniform cash grants will continue this year along with the rollout of the classroom grants which began in 2023.
As such, the finance minister said that $3.1 billion has been budgeted to continue these initiatives.
Added to this, the sum of $4.9 billion has been set aside for the continued rollout and expansion of the school feeding programme set to benefit some 126,000 children across the country.
Among other major investments in the education sector, $4.1 billion has been budgeted to support the operations of the University of Guyana with another $4 billion set aside to support the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) programme.
