IN a targetted operation on Wednesday, officers from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) executed a successful interception at Sandaka Creek, East Corentyne, Berbice, resulting in the arrest of one individual, and the confiscation of a substantial quantity of suspected cannabis.
During the operation, CANU officers observed a boat with two occupants in the vicinity. Upon realising the presence of law enforcement, the individuals hastily abandoned the vessel in an attempt to escape. The CANU officers swiftly pursued the suspects, and successfully apprehended one of them.

A subsequent search of the abandoned boat uncovered a large parcel containing what is suspected to be cannabis. The arrested individual, identified as Athesh Sanichara, 28, was taken into custody and escorted to CANU’s Berbice Office along with the confiscated narcotic.
The seized substance, upon testing, was confirmed to be cannabis, weighing approximately 9.8 kg (about 22 lbs.) with an estimated street value of approximately GUY $2.9 million.
As of now, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the interception and the involvement of the arrested individual are ongoing.
CANU remains committed to combating narcotics trafficking, and this successful operation reflects their dedication to curbing the illegal drug trade in the region.
