MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud took a passionate stand against the troubling increase in bullying cases within schools and other environments.

She emphasised the importance of understanding the various forms of abuse, recognising its occurrence, and the crucial role of both children and adults in reporting such instances.

Addressing a gathering of hundreds of children from various children’s homes, daycares, and private schools at the National Park on Friday, Minister Persaud encouraged children to speak up if they had experienced bullying. She provided guidance on how to respond and introduced a National Anti-Bullying programme developed in collaboration with Young Influencers, which will be shared with agencies and schools.

Minister Persaud also appealed to teachers and parents, urging them to listen to children when they discuss bullying and abuse, emphasising the need to report and address these issues promptly.

She stated, “Kindness [cannot] be over-emphasised,” and added, “For children to confide in parents, they must refrain from verbally or emotionally abusing their own children,” a statement that resonated with many in the audience who admitted to experiencing such mistreatment.

The Minister stressed the importance of maintaining open communication channels while setting a good example. She called for a united response from everyone to combat the scourges of child abuse and bullying. The children enthusiastically responded to her questions and engagement, with many adults nodding in agreement.

Minister Persaud pledged to continue promoting the “Every Child Safe Campaign” through various programmes.

The occasion marked the culmination of Child Protection Week, which began on September 17, 2023, and brought together children from diverse backgrounds.

The event saw the participation of the diplomatic community, including ambassadors from the UK, China, European Union, Chief of Mission and Deputy of the US Embassy, UN Resident Representative, Deputy Director of UNICEF, Chair of the Rights of the Child Commission, parents, educators, teachers, caregivers, and staff of the Human Services Ministry. They joined children seated comfortably on mats and grass, listening to presentations, enjoying child performances, and sharing important messages about child safety.

A spirited march and rally followed, with banners proudly carried and enthusiastic chants from children and adults committing to work together to ensure the safety of all children.

Assistant Directors of the Childcare Agency provided an overview of the purpose of Child Protection Week and the Agency’s various programmes addressing issues like teenage pregnancy, child abuse, and street children. They emphasised the need for collective efforts from all agencies and communities. Representatives from the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Education stressed the importance of child safety and outlined actions that should be taken by various individuals to promote it.

Mr. Irfan Akhter, Deputy Representative of UNICEF for Guyana and Suriname, expressed his admiration for the event and anticipated its growth in raising awareness of children’s issues. He highlighted the excellent collaboration between UNICEF and Human Services, reaffirming UNICEF’s continued commitment.

Children enjoyed a fun-filled time visiting educational booths, winning prizes, and learning about early childhood development, teenage pregnancy, and more, all while enjoying sweet treats and snacks. The event even saw Minister Vindhya and staff members participating in lime and spoon and sack races. Child Protection Week concluded with a resounding commitment to keeping all children safe.
