CARLOS Peterson-Griffith, a remarkable powerlifter, continues to accumulate accolades.

A consistent medalist both domestically and on the international powerlifting stage, he once again displayed his dominance by securing the top spot at the Raw National Championships held at the National Gymnasium, Sunday last.

Competing in the 105kg weight class, Peterson-Griffith demonstrated his exceptional strength without the aid of lifting gear. He achieved an impressive squat of 310kg and a bench press of 165kg.

On his journey to claim the overall title and the leading IPF points, the 29-year-old strongman set a new national record by effortlessly lifting 350kg during the deadlift. His total weight lifted, reaching 825kg, also established a national record in his weight class.

After his remarkable performance, this powerhouse athlete, who had previously secured multiple podium finishes at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Malta last June, expressed his ambition to participate in more international events in the coming year, following the National Senior Championships in December.

Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Keisha Abrigo (76kg) exhibited outstanding form. Her lifts included a 162.5kg squat, a 75kg bench press, a 200kg deadlift, culminating in a total of 437.5kg. Abrigo’s IPF points were the highest among the five female competitors.

Demetri Chan (74kg), Wazeer Hussain (93kg junior), and the 71-year-old Frank Tucker also achieved record-breaking performances at the national level.

It’s important to note that “Raw” powerlifting, in theory, entails lifting with minimal additional equipment. In practice, during competitions, athletes are typically only allowed to use approved belts, singlets, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, and chalk.
