Under-19 selectees benefit from ‘Project Cricket Gear’

FORMER National Under-15 all rounder, Thadeus Lovel, and four-time Berbice Junior Inter County female cricketer, Tiea Isaacs, are the latest to benefit from “Project Cricket for young and promising cricketers in Guyana,” a joint initiative between Anil Beharry and Kishan Das.
Both were selected in the National male and female squads respectively to represent Guyana in the upcoming Regional Under-19 tournaments. Lovel, who is from the famous Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), is a right-hand fast bowling all-rounder while Isaacs, a product of Achievers Cricket Club and student of Bush Lot Secondary School, West Coast, Berbice, is also a right-hand fast bowling all rounder.
Lovel received one cricket bat, one pair of batting pads and one pair of batting gloves while Isaacs collected one cricket bat, one pair of batting pads, one pair of batting gloves and a pair of wicket-keeping gloves to be used by her team during the tournament.

The young striving cricketers were very thankful for the gesture while the project is pleased to be part of the development of young people in Guyana, especially through cricket.

Total cricket-related items received/purchased so far: $370,000 in cash, 13 coloured cricket uniforms, two trophies, 17 pairs of cricket boots, 30 pairs of batting pads, 31 cricket bats, 28 pairs of batting gloves, 21 thigh pads, three pairs of wicket-keeping pads, four arm guards, two boxes, nine cricket bags, six bat rubbers, six helmets and one softball cricket bat. In addition, $600,000 worth in gear was donated by Sheik Mohamed, former National wicket- keeper/batsman. According to Beharry, all cash collected is being used to purchase cricket gear requested and not available at the time.

To date, 61 young players from all three counties of Guyana have benefited from three junior gear bags, two trophies, four arm guards, 25 bats, two boxes, five helmets, 22 pairs of cricket shoes, 15 pairs of batting pads, two thigh pads, one bat rubber, 21 pairs of batting gloves and two pairs of wicket-keeping gloves. In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area received two used bats.
Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenam Cricket Committees and The Cotton Tree Die Hard also got one box of red cricket balls each, Cold Fusion Cricket Club received 13 coloured uniforms while RHCCCC received two, 13 white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket-keeping gloves and a set of stumps and bails. Other beneficiaries are the Essequibo Cricket Board, the Town of Lethem and youth coach, Travis Persaud and softball teams in the Upper Corentyne area.

Cricket-related items, used or new, are distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent spotting is being done across the country and club leaders also assist to identify talent. Progressive and well managed cricket clubs with a youth programme, will also benefit.
