-Regional Vice-Chairman
THE Region Two Vice-Chairman, Humace Oodit, has said that the state-of-the-art stadium that is currently under construction in Anna Regina will transform the township and create opportunities for the region’s sportsmen and sportswomen.
He was at the time speaking to those who had gathered at the Suddie Car Park for a public meeting on Sunday.
The new stadium, which will replace an old wooden structure will have better training facilities which could open doors for athletes to compete internationally, Oodit said.
In addition to the stadium, several grounds are being upgraded in the region to give youths a recreational space they can utilise and enjoy.
Oodit said these upgrades include the installation of floodlights which will help to facilitate the playing of night games.
According to him, the current government is paying attention to sports.
He later emphasised that while the region is investing heavily in infrastructural development, progress is accelerating in other sectors too.
“There are major projects we are doing in Region Two that have never been done before. All these projects are [being] done because of requests [made] by residents. This is being done to ensure that persons enjoy a more comfortable life,” Oodit said.
Oodit therefore called on Essequibians to be a part of the team so that their lives can be transformed and the country can move forward.
Among the big projects for the region are the construction of the multimillion-dollar Abram Zuil Secondary School, rehabilitation of several roads, construction of two call centres, construction of the Commercial and Deeds Registry and the construction of a Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office at Onderneeming.
Oodit said work is also being done in the housing sector and so far, over 700 residents have received their house lots.
He added that families and young people have been given the necessary resources and opportunities to improve their lives.
“We are now giving young people the opportunity to obtain a government scholarship through the GOAL [programme] and many young people in this region are reaping the benefits. They are studying within the confines of their homes, they are working and also upgrading their skills. This is what the government is doing,” Oodit said.
He used the opportunity to encourage persons to exercise their constitutional right to vote when the Local Government Elections are held on June 12.
He called on residents to make “wise decisions” so as to ensure that “progress” in the region continues.
