GBF to honour ‘Reds’ Perreira with ‘Big 4’ playoff

Basketball fans are expected to converge at the Burnham Court this evening to witness the final of the Guyana Basketball Federation’s Big 4 playoff between Georgetown’s Colts and Linden’s Victory Valley Royals from 19.00hrs.

However, more importantly, the GBF, which has arranged to thus play this game in honour of former GBF president, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira, will have the special guest and his wife, Zandra, meet the two teams.

A number of former national players are expected to attend.

Among those expected are the Fitzalbert brothers, Melroy and Merton, Gavin ‘Poppy’ Kendall and overseas-based Phillip Daniels, who were members of the Guyana Central American and Caribbean Games team in the 1970s as well as former captain Eon ‘Watusi’ Andrews and Mark Agard.

Perreira said that he will be making a special presentation to the Michael Singh-led GBF body before the final between Royals and Colts.

‘Reds’ Perreira was part of a group 1951 that introduced the sport here following the viewing of a film ‘Go Man Go’ at a city cinema.

That group also included ken Corsbie and the Taitt brothers, whose yard was used at the time.
