CARICOM, World Food Programme discuss critical priorities for Food Security

DR. ARMSTRONG Alexis, Deputy Secretary-General, CARICOM, met with a delegation from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) led by Stanlake Samkange, Senior Director for Strategic Partnerships, on January 30, 2023, at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana.

Also present were representatives from the Global Alliance for Food Security (GAFS) and Shaun Baugh, Programme Manager, Agriculture Development, CARICOM Secretariat and his team.

The exchange focused on the region’s food security and strategic programmes between the entities.

The following critical priorities emerged from the discussions: Avoid further hunger with country-led needs assessments, humanitarian response, and expanded social safety nets
Boost sustainable agricultural production for upcoming harvests; provide regular agricultural market information and develop dashboard/interactive map to consolidate and present data, track financial resources and share research.

Baugh stated that the meeting yielded fruitful decisions for cooperation between the entities.

He highlighted that the “next steps will explore a full cooperation agreement around the area of food and nutrition security”. (CARICOM Today)
