HIGH COURT Judge, Jo-Ann Barlow, on Thursday, sentenced a 41-year-old Mahaica farmer to 10 years in prison for brutally chopping his reputed wife three years ago.
Fazil Osman, during an appearance at the Demerara High Court in September, admitted that, on February 24, 2019, at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, he wounded the woman with intent to commit murder.
Prosecutor Latifiah Elliot presented the State’s case, while attorney-at-law Teriq Mohammed is on record for Osman.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim said that, after all these years, she had finally received justice.
Justice Morris-Ramlall, in her sentencing remarks, told Osman that violence was inexcusable, and that she found no mitigating factors in his favour.
After considering the nature of the case and the prevalence of the crime, the judge sentenced Osman to 10 years.
According to reports, Osman and the victim had shared a common-law relationship, but due to the domestic abuse she suffered at his hands, she decided to end it.
On the day in question, the victim, while in the company of a Rural Constable, reportedly went to Osman’s home to serve him with a restraining order. However, he whipped out a cutlass and dealt the woman several chops about the body.
