IT is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Justice Duke Pollard, a colleague and friend of many years. He was indeed a legal luminary, respected globally as much for his exceptional body of scholarly work in international law, as for service to the United Nations and the CARICOM Community, the Caribbean Court of Justice as one of its inaugural appointees, and, more recently, as Professor of Law at the University of Guyana.

It was an inspirational experience to share the space with him in the senior management of the CARICOM Secretariat and to witness at first hand, the expansive nature of his intellect, creative talents as CARICOM’s Legal Counsel and his role in the drafting of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

In this regard, he leaves the legacy of his foundational contribution to the modernisation of CARICOM. In his latest position at the University of Guyana as Professor of law, I can only imagine the awe in which he was held by those who benefitted from his tutelage. l know that the university will ever record an inadequate appreciation for his wise counsel and advocacy for the elevation of the Faculty of Law and its graduates by Caribbean’s Council of Legal Education.

He will be greatly missed for his professionalism, wisdom and abounding wit. On behalf of the Council of the University of Guyana, I pay tribute to the life and service of the late Justice Pollard and extend deepest sympathies to his family.
