A new magistrates’ court will be constructed in the Westminster/Parfaite Harmonie area, according to Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Anil Nandlall.

Through his official Facebook page, the Attorney General said that a high-level team visited the community on Wednesday to get a glimpse of the plot of land earmarked for the construction of the “modern Magistrates Court”.

The team included Housing and Water Minister, Collin Croal and a technical team from his ministry; Chancellor (ag) of the Judiciary, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards; Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George; Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and a team from the Supreme Court.

“This is yet another example of constructive engagement and co-operation between the Executive and the Judiciary in their common pursuit to build a modern, competent and efficient justice system, accessible by and to every citizen,” the Attorney General said in his social media post.

There are already two magistrates’ courts — at Wales and Vreed-en-Hoop — which are already established in the West Demerara area, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

Those courts, however, have been overburdened by the swell of residents in that area due to the housing scheme, the AG noted. “This new court house will significantly relieve the burden from the other two courts,” he said.

Added to the establishment of the Westminster/Parfaite Harmonie court, magistrates’ courts will also be built at Friendship and Timehri, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), as well as in Anna Regina, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
