Guyana beat Burundi, Timor-Leste in Round 10 of Chess Olympiad

GUYANA’S Open team got past the East African nation of Burundi, while the Women’s team got the better of the southeast nation of Timor-Leste on Monday, during Round 10 of the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India.
The Open team, comprising Candidate Master Taffin Khan, FIDE Master Anthony Drayton, Loris Nathoo and Ethan Lee, scored 2.5 points against Burundi’s 1.5 to win the round.

Drayton defeated Joe Rukundo, while the remaining three team members all drew their matches. CM Taffin Khan drew with Dieudonne Muheto (1830 rating points); Nathoo with Hugues Mutabazi (1666) and Lee with Havyarimana Elvis (1724).

According to information from the federation, team members will all rack up rating points from their Burundi opponents.
Meanwhile, the Women’s team, comprising Anaya Lall, Jessica Callender, Sasha Shariff and Pooja Lam, also scored 2.5 points compared to their opponents’ 1.5 to win their round.

Lam, whose rating is 1163, scored her second win of the tournament when she battled against Timor-Leste’s Zulmira Tilman (1255). Callender also won her game against Maria do Ceu Gusmao (1442). Both players have improved rating points from these victories.

Young Anaya Lall missed her chance at winning against her Timor-Leste counterpart Elfiana Dos Santos (1560) and instead drew her game earning her half of a point.
The final round was scheduled for yesterday with the Open team against Haiti and the Women’s team against Libya.
