COMMISSIONER of Police (ag), Clifton Hicken, has condemned a recent altercation between an officer of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and a civilian.
In a video that was circulated on various social media platforms, a traffic rank could be seen trading punches with a civilian, who was purportedly resisting arrest.

The acting Top Cop has since said that an investigation will be done with some degree of alacrity to ascertain the reason for this incident, and to avoid such occurrences moving forward. He also appealed to the public to co-operate with the police and vice versa.

“The police does not and cannot operate in isolation, thus the need for partnership and co-operation between the police and the public – one that should be premised on mutual trust and co-operation while exploring every avenue to maintain law and order in society,” Hicken was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the GPF.

The acting Top Cop assured the public that the police force is working on ensuring that there is strict adherence to the standard operations procedures (SOPs), and that ranks are professional in the discharge of their duties, even in the face of harassment and intimidation from non-co-operating civilians.
