ALFRED Braithwaite was on Friday sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for attempting to murder a man, allegedly over a gambling game.
The sentence was imposed by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Demerara High Court.
Last month, a 12-member jury found Braithwaite guilty of the offence, which read that on January 27, 2017, in the County of Demerara, he attempted to murder Chefton Haymer.
He had pleaded not guilty at the time, and was represented by Attorney-at-Law Teriq Mohammed.
According to reports, on the day in question, Braithwaite and Haymer were reportedly gambling with cards.
It is alleged that the two had a disagreement over the sequence of the cards; it was Haymer who raised this issue, demanding the return of his money.
Braithwaite, however, refused and left the game, but later returned with another man, who was reportedly armed with a cutlass. Together, they attacked Haymer.
