JOEL Spooner was remanded to prison, on Wednesday, for allegedly fatally stabbing his 19-year-old girlfriend, Shenese Walks, whose lifeless body was reportedly discovered at their Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) home.

Spooner, a 21-year-old labourer, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that, between April 12 and April 13, 2022, at Craig, he murdered Walks, who is a school teacher.

Spooner was remanded to prison. He will return to court on May 17.

Walks, of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), occupied the home with Spooner at the time the incident occurred.

It is alleged that the couple had a misunderstanding during which Walks armed herself with a knife.

Spooner had reportedly told police that he tried taking the knife away from his girlfriend but ended up stabbing her in the left side of her neck.

He then reportedly secured the house and fled. On April 13, police said Spooner told his brother what had transpired.

It was further reported that his brother, along with an aunt, escorted the suspect to the Grove Police Station where he was handed over to the police.

When police visited the scene, the body of Walks was discovered in a pool of blood with the knife still in the left side of her neck.
