PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Monday that the government will construct a National Stadium in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) as part of their endeavours to further develop the region.

President Ali, who was speaking to residents at the Drop-in Centre in Smithfield, New Amsterdam, stated, ‘to support that national stadium, we will build an entire new urban centre.”

This urban centre, he explained, will feature new hostels and hospitals. And importantly, the government has already received proposals for these developments to start before the end of this year.

It is understood that the stadium would be built at Palmyra.

The President is leading an outreach activity with residents of Region Six and is joined by some members of his cabinet to hear many concerns and suggestions from the residents.

Through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, there are also plans to transform the historic Albion Community Centre back to a standard where it can at least resume hosting Regional cricket.
