A 37-year-old man who allegedly stole 11 solar lights from the fence bordering the University of Guyana’s Science Centre at John’s, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared on Friday at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Alex Moore.
Nazeem Khan was not required to plead to the simple larceny charge which was read to him during the Skype hearing.
It is alleged that on March 21, 2022, Khan stole the solar lights which are together valued $115,000.
According to reports, a university official made a report to the Whim Police Station after being informed that the lights were missing.
Police, during their investigation, were reportedly informed that the accused had approached someone asking if they knew of anyone who might be interested in purchasing solar lights.
At that time, Khan reportedly had the lights in his possession.
Based on this information, a detective corporal and ranks from the anti -crime patrol unit arrested Khan who was found hiding inside a covered car, which was parked under his home.
He will make his second appearance at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on May 9.
