ONE day after pleading not guilty to the attempted murder of a pregnant woman, Richard Mohammed, on Wednesday, changed his plea to guilty.
Mohammed, 31, of Lower Pomeroon, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was, at the time making his second appearance before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Demerara High Court, for the commencement of his trial.
Mohammed had denied that, on March 25, 2021, in the county of Essequibo, he attempted to murder the 23-year-old woman, who was six weeks pregnant.
However, on Wednesday, he opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of felonious wounding.
He is being represented by attorney-at-law George Thomas while prosecutor Tiffini Lyken is on record for the State.
Justice Barlow deferred sentencing until April 7, 2022.
The chopping incident occurred in the wee hours of March 25, 2021. The mother of five lost several fingers and was also chopped to the head and other parts of the body.
According to reports, her house was also set ablaze by Mohammed.
