POPULAR sports store, Star Sports Trophies and Awards of 28 Logwood, Enmore, East Coast, Demerara, has donated more cricket gear for the ‘Cricket gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana’ project.

At a simple handing-over ceremony held recently, former National senior wicketkeeper\batter Sheikh Mohamed presented bats, batting gloves, junior cricket balls, wicket, cricket bags, keeping pads and gloves, cricket shoes and clothing with an average value of $600 000.
Mohamed is the owner of Star Sports. This follows an earlier donation of gear towards the project. The sports store is the agent for authentic major cricket brands around the world and provides the highest quality of gear and other sports equipment.

In presenting the gear to Anil Beharry, a partner in this initiative along with Kishan Das of the USA, Mohamed stated that he is impressed with the level of accountability and the reach of this venture. He is happy that young players from all three counties of Guyana are benefiting, thus this additional contribution.
Beharry, a current executive of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), expressed gratitude for the gear and committed to help as many young cricketers as possible in Guyana. He is hopeful that a new breed of young players will come through the system, making Guyana and West Indies cricket strong again. He alluded to the fact that sports in general helps to keep our young people off the streets and is an avenue to a better life.

Total cricket-related items collected so far: $130 000 cash, two trophies, eleven cricket boots, 15 pairs of batting pads, 15 bats, nine pairs of batting gloves, 18 thigh pads, one wicket-keeping pad, one arm guard and four cricket bags in addition to the above $600 000 worth in gear.
To date, 32 young players from all three counties of Guyana have already benefited from a junior gear bag, two trophies, nine bats, nine pairs of cricket shoes, six pairs of batting pads and seven pairs of batting gloves. In addition, Rose Hall Estate Cricket Club benefited from a pair of stumps and bails. Two clubs in the Pomeroon area received two used bats.

Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenam cricket committees each received one box of red cricket balls.
Cricket-related items, used or new, will be distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent-spotting is being done across the country and club leaders will also assist to identify talent.
