Lata Mangeshkar was among the greats

THE world gave many great people over the years. We had Christopher Columbus, the European who discovered the West Indies in 1492. Charles Darwin, the evolutionist. Williams Shakespeare, the play writer of Hamlet; Albert Einstein, the scientist and in sports the great cricketer, Sir Garfield Sobers. But the latest of all is the late singer of India, Lata Mangeshkar, the singer and nightingale of India.

With 30,000 songs in her career, singing for Bollywood films and sang in several different languages, she was well accepted and admired in the world. Her voice was second to none. Her voice was inimitable.

In Guyana, the Indian population all adored her and local singers failed to imitate her singing voice. Indo-Guyanese including Indian businessmen, civic society, religious organisations and the government should raise a fund and build a cultural centre in her honour. This can be achieved if we want to.

Yours sincerely,
