LIONEL Berkeley, 24, of Lot 58, East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown died Monday night on the Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a female pedestrian who was crossing the road at the time.
Berkley, who is a driver at the Ministry of Labour, died in the accident, while the woman is said to be in critical condition.
The pedestrian has been identified as Shirley Hollingsworth of Public Road, Agricola.
The 66-year-old woman is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit, and her condition has been listed as critical.
According to the police, Berkeley was riding motorcycle CK 5462, proceeding north along the centre of the western carriageway on the Agricola Public Road without a safety helmet when he allegedly collided with a female pedestrian who was crossing from east to west on a pedestrian crossing.
As a result of the collision, police said both the motorcyclist and the pedestrian fell onto the road’s surface, where they received injuries about their bodies.
The motorcyclist was picked up in an unconscious state and transported by ambulance to the GPHC, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is at the Hospital’s mortuary awaiting post mortem.
The pedestrian was also picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens, and taken to the GPHC.
Police are investigating the incident.
