October’s COVID-19 death toll climbs to 45

TWO more unvaccinated persons have died after contracting COVID-19, taking October’s death toll to 45 and the country’s overall figure to 842.

The Ministry of Health said that the latest fatalities are an 88-year-old man from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and a 63-year-old woman from Region Four (Demerara -Mahaica). Both persons died on October 10, 2021, while being treated at a Ministry of Health facility.

Additionally, there are currently 3,905 active COVID-19 cases in Guyana, following the addition of 52 new cases on October 10, 2021, from the 752 tests that were conducted.

The new cases were recorded in Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Six, Seven and 10.
Region Four accounted for 21 of the new cases, while Region One recorded two new cases; Region Two, 10 cases; Region Three, eight cases; Region Six, five; Region Seven, two cases and Region 10 recorded four cases.

The country has now recorded a total of 33,748 confirmed cases since the first COVID-19 case was reported in March 2020.
Of the active cases, 29 persons are at the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the National Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal; 145 are in institutional isolation; 3,728 are in home isolation, and three are in institutional quarantine.

Many of the persons infected with the virus are said to be asymptomatic, that is, they are not exhibiting symptoms.
The updated COVID-19 Emergency Measures are in force until October 31, 2021. They may be extended or amended by notice of the Minister of Health, after an assessment of the prevailing public health conditions of the pandemic.

As per the current measures, all persons are required to wear face masks when leaving their homes, and physical distancing and adequate sanitisation are recommended. The current curfew is 22:30hrs to 04:00hrs.
