A disciplined spell from right-arm medium-fast opening bowler, Altaaf Habibulla, led pro-Guyanese team Richmond Hill Liberty to a 10-wicket win against fellow Guyanese side, Phoenix Cricket Club, yesterday at Baisley ground in the NYNCL Rockaway Group T20 Cup (Sunday competition).
Phoenix, who have a strong team for the Saturday competition, were without the big names on Sunday.
In the clash, Phoenix CC won the toss and opted to bat, and although opener Daniel Mangru managed to score a first-over boundary, Habibulla, with an improved line and length, had the last laugh as he had Mangru dismissed five balls into the innings. Over his next three overs, he took 4-1 with two maidens to finish with 5-6 from four overs.
The top-order destruction by the ace Liberty bowler took the fight out of Phoenix.
Tejpaul Bishundat showed some resistance with 21, but he was undone by former West Indies U-19 cricketer, Gajanand Singh, who, incidentally, plays for Phoenix on Saturdays. Towards the end, Kenly Adams (18 from 22 balls 2X6s) and Samuel Mahabir (11* from 17 balls) added 31 for the 10th wicket before the team succumbed for 76 in 19 overs.
Singh and Leon Mohabir supported with two wickets each.
Needing to score at 3.8 runs per over, former national U-19 cricketer, Azeemuddin Khan struck six fours and two sixes for a top score of 41 from 30 balls.
Christopher Blucher was also unbeaten. His 30 runs came off of 24 balls and included two fours and two sixes, which propelled the side to victory in nine overs.
