KEEVIN Allicock, Desmond Amsterdam, Colin Lewis and Dennis Thomas will have a chance that only few Guyanese professional and no boxers have had before.
The four senior fighters are scheduled to compete at this year’s AIBA World Championship with each having the opportunity to win twenty million Guyana dollars or US$100,000.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle yesterday confirmed to Chronicle Sport that AIBA will pay out US$100,000 to each gold medal winner, US$50,000 for silver and US$25,000 for bronze medal winners at the World Championship scheduled for October 26 to November 6 in Belgrade, Serbia.
It is the first time in the 75-year history of AIBA that prize money is up for grabs at the World Championship. According to Ninvalle the prize money is another delivered promise of AIBA president Umar Kremlev.
President Kremlev has remained true to his word. AIBA boxers can now earn money equal to that of professionals. This is a welcomed input to our sport and one that should result in even more determined efforts and heightened interest from athletes”, Ninvalle said.
The GBA, Ninvalle added, will follow suit and have monetary prizes at its National Championship. This year Guyana will be sending its largest team ever to the championship. The four boxers will be accompanied by AIBA Three Star coach Sebert Blake.
Arrangements are being finalised for the boxing quartet to attend a training camp in Serbia. Meanwhile, the GBA boss explained that recently every boxing gym across Guyana has been donated a quantity of gear.
During the last three weeks all gyms were given Heavy bags, speed balls, gloves (10, 12 and 14 ounces), skipping ropes, mouth guards, hand wraps and groin protectors among others. This became possible following a donation from AIBA.
