…during confrontation at Vreed-en-Hoop stelling
POLICE are on the hunt for a man who stabbed a Sophia, Georgetown resident to death, and wounded his brother, during a heated confrontation at the Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara stelling, on Saturday night.
Dead is 26-year—old Sigmol Gouveia of Block ‘A’ Sophia; his brother, Neville Gouveia, 37, is hospitalised with stab wounds at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. Neville is employed as a security guard at the Dock Yard of the stelling.
Police Headquarters revealed that, about 23:10 hrs, a boat arrived at the stelling koker with three unknown males; one of the males exited the vessel while the remaining two took the boat out on the said river.
A short while after, there was a verbal confrontation between Sigmol and the male who disembarked the boat. Police said the male was told by Sigmol that he cannot use the said area for passage and that he should call his friends from the boat to pick him up.
It is alleged that the suspect called his friends to collect him. However, another argument ensued between the two and the suspect reportedly stabbed Sigmol to his abdomen. Sigmol collapsed and was rendered unconscious.
Neville, who witnessed the stabbing, approached the suspect, and he too received stab wounds to his right upper arm and chest.
The boat then returned shortly after with over 10 people on board; they were all armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses. they collected the suspect and they all headed across the river, the police report noted.
Both victims were picked up by the police and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Sigmol was pronounced dead and his brother was admitted a patient.
