The Met Gala, which is basically a nickname for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, is an iconic event that attracts celebrities from many parts of the world; most especially, Hollywood.

Meghan Decker of Refinery 29 reported that the theme for Monday night’s affair was “In America”, and the celebrities who attended the illustrious event interpreted the prompt in every possible way.

In her article, Decker painted a clear picture of the icons who graced the evening. She writes that Billie Eilish paid homage to Marilyn Monroe, while Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a gown with “Tax The Rich” painted in red across the back, and Kim Kardashian went incognito in a full-body Balenciaga blackout hoodie; Guyanese on social media have been jokingly referring to Kardashian as a healthy dose of “black out”.

Nonetheless, as was captured in the many photos emanating from the event, 19-year-old Indigenous model and activist Quannah Chasinghorse was the one who stood out amid the star-studded guest list, which also included our very own, RiRi.

The teen was praised by a host of social-media commentators for choosing to embrace her roots, and more particularly, for “understood the assignment” of American representation.

As Guyana celebrates Indigenous Heritage Month, the young lady’s representation was much welcomed, and served as a beautiful motivation for young Amerindian girls to embrace their cultures, and the traditions of our Indigenous ancestors.

Decker in her writing, continued that Chasinghorse, who goes by Quannah Rose on Instagram, identifies with her Indigenous ancestry, both Hän Gwich’in (from Canada and Alaska) and Native American Oglala Lakota (from South Dakota).

Vogue recently profiled the up-and-coming model, calling her one of fashion’s “freshest new faces.” Visually stunning, even without a bit of makeup, Chasinghorse is recognized for her traditional Hän Gwich’in face tattoos: lines dashed down her chin and extending out from the corners of her eyes. The hand-poked lines are called Yidįįłtoo, and they symbolize life events. “The lines represent overcoming generational and personal traumas,” Chasinghorse told Vogue.

Of course, given the Met’s sky-high standards, Chasinghorse worked with an entire styling team for the evening. She wore a gold cut-out gown by Peter Dundas for Revolve and authentic Navajo turquoise jewelry (that her aunt flew in to NYC). Makeup artist Gucci Westman, the founder and creator of makeup label Westman Atelier, created a statement beauty look focused on glowing skin (courtesy of products from 111SKIN), intensified eyes, and a soft nude lip. “Quannah is a strong, passionate, beautiful woman — and I really wanted the makeup to enhance that,” Westman explained.

To “really define the tear line,” Westman used a duo of black eyeliners from Chanel, Le Crayon Eye Definer and Liquid Liner in Noir. Then, she used her Westman Atelier Eye Pods eyeshadow in Noir, a metallic black, with Bonne Chance, a khaki green shade, and swept the cream powder across Chasinghorse’s lower lash line. For the lips, she used a mix of rosy tones pulled from her Westman Atelier Lip Suede palette in Les Nudes. (Original article by Meghan Decker of Refinery 29).

OUR GIRL RiRi IMPRESSED AS EXPECTED
As has become known, Robyn Rihanna Fenty is an icon of the Met Gala. If there is anything that fans lookout for every year, its definitely who and what RiRi wears, and according to Christopher luu of ‘In Style’ magazine, Rihanna always understands the assignment when it comes to the Gala.

In his article, Luu writes that as celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Gigi Hadid, and Whoopi Goldberg made their way up the hallowed stairs of the Met Gala this year, there was one thing on everyone’s mind — even red-carpet co-host Keke Palmer. Where was Rihanna? She posed the question to a few of her guests, who all said that they were waiting with bated breath to see what RiRi would bring to the carpet after her bright yellow Guo Peo gown and her papal Margiela look.

When Rihanna did make her presence known at the gala, fans had already seen peeks of her look on social media, where videos appeared of her wearing a beanie over a shimmering headpiece and what looked like a huge jacket. Some speculated that there’d be a big reveal when she arrived at the big event alongside her beau ASAP Rocky, everything in the videos was there, down to the beanie.

The jacket did have a traditional gown silhouette, complete with a dramatic train and portrait collar — and Rihanna did add some sparkle with a shimmering choker.

While other guests shrugged off the question of how their ensembles fit within the Met’s exhibit, Ri skipped out on the interviews, so fans may have to wait for an explanation.

But the night did have another big moment: it was the first time that Ri and Rocky hit a red carpet together, putting dating rumours to rest.
