NASHVILLE, Tennessee.- The United States and Canada played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday night, each leaving Nashville, Tennessee’s Nissan Stadium with a point.
The result means both North American nations took their total tally to two points so far in the Final Round of CONCACAF World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022 after each drew in Thursday’s openers as well.
Canada showed it had aspirations to do more than simply get a point in the 13th minute, with Alphonso Davies beating his defender, getting to the end line and looking to set up Cyle Larin. U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner got a glove on the shot from Larin and pushed it out of play for a corner kick.
The U.S. also came close to opening the scoring in the first half, with Christian Pulisic smashing a shot off the post in the 40th minute after Sebastian Lletget set up Brenden Aaronson for a cross to the U.S. captain.
And it was the U.S. who went into the lead in the 55th minute. Kellyn Acosta sent a pass to left back Antonee Robinson, whose low cross found a sliding Aaronson, who was able to score his fourth-ever international goal and the first goal for the U.S. in the final round of World Cup qualification.
But the score was once again level in the 62nd minute, as the Davies-Larin connection finally paid off. Davies broke down the wing, running onto a ball from defender Sam Adekugbe, and set up Larin for a right-footed goal with his first touch.
Each team had chances to take all three points from the tight encounter, with Canada’s Tajon Buchanan flashing forward and putting in an attempt that just missed the target shortly after he entered the contest in the 66th minute. The U.S. won a handful of late free kicks in dangerous areas, with Miles Robinson’s header over the bar on a late corner kick perhaps the best opportunity.
The U.S. now heads to Honduras looking for its first win of the campaign, while Canada will also look for its opening victory of the final round when it heads home to face El Salvador.(CONCACAF.COM)
