WHILE originally considered a luxury reserved for women alone, spa treatments for men have become more normalized in today’s society. When men go to a spa, it’s to have an opportunity to relax, be pampered and to feel rejuvenated.
However, some say that that experience is sometimes sullied by the questioning, curious looks of women at the spas, critical looks from therapists, and the overall discomfort of the posh décor. It is to this end that married couple, Avinash and Odetta Sukhraj, have committed to creating a space where men can feel comfortable being pampered completely, in an environment that is more familiar to them, with the opening of The Gentleman’s Lounge.
The Gentleman’s Lounge, located at Lot 1 Princess Street, Werk-en-Rust, features a barbershop and salon, spa, bar and restaurant, all in one convenient location.
“We’re trying to have all the services in one place, so you can come and get pampered, and have everything else done. So you can come and get your hair done, you could get your full-body massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials,” Avinash told the Guyana Chronicle, at the lounge’s opening on Saturday.
According to his wife, Odetta, the concept for the male-oriented retreat came about after she noticed how out-of-place men appeared to feel when they visited spas, which cater primarily to female customers.
“The décor and everything, we did in a masculine way, because, well… I like to go to the spa. And whenever I go there, and there are men there, they always look uncomfortable. You know, a lot of women are there, and we give them a kind of side-eye,” the young woman laughingly explained.
“So, I was thinking, you know, maybe if we made a place for them, then they can come, be comfortable, the environment is set for them; so you know, they can feel a little more at ease while they enjoy the same services like massages and so on, because those are very relaxing,” she added.
While this spa may be one of the very few that caters mainly to male customers, Odetta noted that women can visit the Gentleman’s Lounge as well.
“…we have everything set to cater to a man, but women are included, as well. That’s why we have a small bar, a little restaurant, the barbers, and the salon,” she stated.
The Gentleman’s Lounge boasts a comfortable, easygoing atmosphere, with a barbershop-themed interior design. Full-body massages, manicures and pedicures, facial treatments, hair treatments, and package deals are available.
