TUESDAY marked 43 years since the Demerara Harbour Bridge was first opened to traffic.
After four decades and counting, the bridge remains a vital link, and an important piece of infrastructure in the everyday lives of thousands of Guyanese.
Public Works Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, in brief remarks, noted that the Government of Guyana has recognised the necessity of a bridge across the Demerara River, and has since committed to maintaining and ensuring that the monumental structure remains operable and safe, even while the model of a four-lane, high-span concrete bridge as a new project is now at the procurement stage. Expressing his gratitude to the workers of the harbour bridge, the minister said: “We express thanks to the Chairman, to the Board of Directors, the General Manager and staff for all they have been doing to ensure that this bridge is usable; we recognise the contributions of the many who have served as both directors and staff of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation. Let us all value what we have as we pursue greater and better things.”
