Archibald, Williams stand out on final day of Senior Athletics Championships

EMANUEL Archibald leaped to the men’s Long Jump title while Daniel Williams powered to the 200m title at the National Senior Athletics Championships, which concluded on Sunday at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora.
The 21-year-old Williams, back on the track after injury, surged to the top spot on the podium in a time of 21.06 seconds ahead of Akeem Stewart (21.35s) and Nolex Holder (21.46s).
The Lindener made a smooth transition out of the blocks and looked the clear winner as he entered the final 100m of the race.
Williams, who is on scholarship at Hinds Community College in the United States of America, said he is just happy to be back on the track after recovering from numerous injuries, and he is looking forward to the upcoming season.

Emanuel Archibald won the men’s Long Jump with a best leap of 7.82m

The women’s 200m was won by Juvonna Cornette of Titans Athletics in a time of 24.85s ahead of Ruth Sanmoogan (25.13s) and Keliza Smith (25.24s).
In the middle-distance event, favourite Devaun Barrington, of the Guyana Defence Force, produced a time of one minute and 53.02 seconds to win the 800m ahead of teammate, Nicholas Daw (1:55.84s) and Anfernee Headecker (1:55.94s).
Joanna Archer dominated the female event with a time of two minutes and 12.62 seconds, way ahead of Shaquka Tyrell (2:19.30s) and Tia Azore (2:32.34s).
Cleveland Thomas won the 5000m in 16 minutes and 01.72 seconds, to exact revenge on the young Sir Kennard Hartog, who defeated him in the 10,000m. Hartog clocked 16:29.28s for second and Marlon Nicholson (16:40.05s) was third.
Meanwhile, Archibald, the national record holder in the Long Jump, had the best leap of 7.82m, which was not close to his season-best of 8.10 meters which he produced earlier in the year at Leonora. Damon Williams (7.57m) and Micaiah Washington (7.57m) were second and third.

Despite battling a toe injury, Chantoba Bright completed the ‘double’ as she won the female event with a best leap of 6.28m. Sanmoogan (6.02m) and Toyan Raymond (5.82m) completed the next two podium spots.
The women’s shotput event was comfortably won by Anneisa DeAbreu (10.30m) while Teniesah Cort (9.82m) and Main McPherson (9.16m) were the other top three finishers.

Julio Sinclair had the best throw of 16.12m, which easily gave him the men’s title as Osafo Dosantos (15.83m) and Jermain Simmons (15.56s) were second and third, respectively.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, labelled the event as a success and indicated the next will be the National Youth and Junior Championships, tentatively set for July.
