STUDENTS and teachers attending the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School in Region Two, on Friday, donated 50 food hampers to St Monica/Karawab and Kabakaburi Amerindian communities.

The students and teachers are part of the school’s Social Cohesion Club which is overlooked by teachers Nikita James and Gary Williams. James said the students, teachers and residents contributed towards the hampers.

Twenty-five hampers were donated to St Monica/Karawab while 25 were donated to Kabakaburi. The hampers consist of basic food items and cleaning supplies. They were packed by students and then taken to Charity for distribution.

At the handing over ceremony, Toshao of St Monica/Karawab, Eve Samuels, expressed gratitude, noting that the donation came at an opportune time when the houses of many are under floodwater. Deputy Toshao of Kabakaburi, Mattais Smith, expressed similar sentiments. He said that due to the pandemic and the flooding, his residents are unemployed.

Meanwhile, the Regional Democratic Council is undertaking an ongoing relief effort with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to distribute food hampers, water, storage tanks, and sanitisers.
Regional Executive Officer of Region Two, Devanand Ramdatt, commended the students and teachers for the act of kindness.

The Amerindian communities of St Monica/Karwab and Kabakaburi were severely affected by flooding on May 25, 2021. Houses and farmlands were inundated with about four feet of water. Ten families were relocated to higher grounds.
