ACE Guyanese boxer Elton Dharry is set to fight either a Mexican opponent or a boxer from Omaha, Nebraska, USA next month.
The fight is scheduled for the Forster Community Centre in Rock Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, July 17.
Along with the explosive Dharry, current WBC Latino Champion Ron Cruz is also carded to fight.
FINDING BOXERS
Negotiations are currently taking place between Dharry’s expected opponents and organisers of the event, 15 Rounds Promotions.
Dharry, who suffered a debatable loss against home boxer Andrew Moloney in November of 2019 for the interim WBA super flyweight title in Melbourne, Australia, was flawless for almost a decade.
Prior to the Moloney bout, Dharry had won 21 straight fights.
He said that finding a boxer to fight him these days has been challenging, more so because seasoned fighters are not looking to get into the ring with him since it can hurt their chances of a title shot or damage their records.
“I’ve been preparing for a fight for some time and keep getting little minor setbacks. A least six opponents turned down fighting me.”
CONFIDENT OF DELIVERING
Once he gets an opponent, the Brooklyn-based fighter is confident of delivering. He said that New York, where he lives, is finally allowing more activities, including sparring sessions, so his training has improved.
Additionally, he is hoping that the clash will give him needed ring work for a September fight in Guyana, which should be a title bout.
“This fight is a warm-up fight. I’m getting a title fight in Guyana on September 25. It’s up to Gary Sinclair and the Guyana Boxing Board (GBC) to work out the fighter. It’s going to be a big fight and big event.”
With COVID-19 restrictions and a less than assertive management team (now dropped), Dharry was bereft of opportunities.
Having not entered the ring after almost 20 months has also temporarily dropped him out of the top 10 in the World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight division.
In August of 2019, he was ranked sixth.
“One of my objectives is to get back in the ranking. As long as I get back into the ring, I’ll get back in the ranking.”
Although Dharry has a string of titles attached to his name, including the national bantamweight title, WBC Caribbean bantamweight belt, IBF Intercontinental title and the WBU Americas bantamweight belt, his ultimate dream is to win a world title.
“Had I a proper management team in my career, opportunities might have been better. I never had the luxury of people pushing for me, I had to push myself … I keep believing that I’ll win a world title. I feel really good physically and am confident that I’ll be able to do so.”
