COVID-19 death toll rises to 424

-107 new cases

THE Ministry of Health, on Saturday, reported that as of Friday, June 11, two more persons who tested positive for COVID-19, have succumbed to the virus. The total number of deaths is now 424.

The latest fatalities are a 51-year-old woman from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a 71-year-old man from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), who both died while receiving care at a Ministry of Health facility. Their deaths push the COVID-19 toll for June, 2021 to 26.

Additionally, the Health Ministry has recorded 107 new cases of COVID-19, with 1,199 tests conducted for Friday, June 11.

Of those, Region One (Barima-Waini) recorded two; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), six; Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), nine; Region Four, 55; Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), four; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), five; Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), two; Region Nine, two, and Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice), 12.

The newly infected persons were 44 males and 63 females. Currently, there are 21 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 113 in institutional isolation, 1,495 isolated at home, and three in institutional quarantine.

Guyana has confirmed a total of 18,303 cases of COVID-19 since the discovery of the deadly virus in the country. Of that number, 1,632 are currently active; and of the 16,250 recoveries, 140 were recorded within the past 24 hours.

All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six-foot physical distance from others, and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
