Sergeant, corporal and constable in custody for alleged theft of US$120,000

WITH a view to stamping out corruption and restoring public confidence in the Guyana Police Force, three police ranks from Berbice are now in custody at Brickdam Police Station for allegedly stealing US$120,000. The sergeant, corporal and constable are being investigated by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
Reports indicated that on May, 14, 2021, the aforementioned police ranks, acting on information received, intercepted a motor car with three Chinese nationals at the Number 77 Village, Corentyne. The police ranks conducted a search on the vehicle and a large quantity of US dollars was found.
The Chinese nationals claimed that it was US$417,000. But, on arrival at the Springlands Police Station, US$120,000 was discovered missing.
As a result, the Special Organised Crime Unit was called in to conduct investigations. According to police, the ranks are cooperating with the investigators.
