TWO men, who were arrested for allegedly robbing a taxi driver of his motorcar and other valuables at gunpoint, appeared, on Monday, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court and were remanded to prison by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool Stephon Daphness, 24, of Hill Street, Albouystown and Daniel McArthur, 19, of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD), pleaded not guilty to the joint armed robbery charge. Particulars of the charge alleged that the duo, on May 13, 2021, at Second Street, Cummings Lodge, ECD, while being armed with a gun, robbed Miles Burrows of a Toyota Allion motorcar, HD 1860, valued at $3.2M and belonging to Sandra Bradley, an LG cell phone valued at $35,000 and $55,000 cash. Magistrate Liverpool remanded the duo to prison until June 9, 2021.
According to reports, on the day in question, Burrows was working his taxi in the vicinity of Middle Road, La Penitence when he was stopped by the two accused, who requested a taxi to take them to Second Street, Cummings Lodge.
On arrival at the destination, Daphness reportedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at Burrows, while McArthur choked him from behind. They relieved the man of his cell phone and cash before tying his hands and forcing him into the trunk of his car.
The duo then drove off in an unknown direction. Burrows managed to escape while the vehicle was on Sheriff Street.
The matter was reported to the police and, on May 14, acting on a “tip-off” ranks went to a location at Vryheid’s Lust and reportedly caught the duo attempting to change the number plate. They were arrested and subsequently charged.
McArthur is no stranger to the court. On May 3rd, he was charged with armed robbery and was out on $150,000 bail. He also has two other similar matters before the courts.
