COVID-19 claims another life

–160 new cases recorded in 24 hours

EVEN as the fight against COVID-19 continues, Guyana has recorded its 41st COVID-19-related death for the month of April, taking the country’s death toll to 274, according to statistics on the health ministry’s COVID-19 dashboard for April 21, 2020.
The latest fatality is a 52-year-old female from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), who died while receiving treatment at a medical facility on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) continues to record a surge in COVID-19 cases, accounting for a total of 94 positive cases out of the 160 recorded in the past 24 hours. The new cases recorded on Wednesday took Guyana’s total confirmed cases to 12,132.
The 160 new cases were recorded from a total of 3,002 tests. The country now has a total of 1,421 active cases, but the recovery of 145 persons within the past 24 hours took the total number of persons, who have recovered since March 2020, to 10,442.

Nine of the ten administrative regions recorded new cases. And, of those cases, in addition to those recorded in Region Four, Region One recorded one new case; Region Two recorded eight new cases; Region Three, 20 new cases; Region Six, 17; Region Seven, two; Region Eight, five; Region nine, four and Region 10, nine new cases.
According to the dashboard, 12 of the 1,421 active cases are being kept at the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU); 74 are in institutional isolation, 1,330 are in home isolation and five are in institutional quarantine. Many of the persons infected with the virus are said to be asymptomatic, that is, exhibiting no symptoms.
The updated COVID–19 Emergency Measures are in force from April 1, 2021, until April 30, 2021. They may be extended or amended by notice of the Minister of Health, after an assessment of the prevailing public health conditions of the pandemic.
As per the current measures, however, all persons are required to wear face masks when leaving their homes. Physical distancing and adequate sanitization are also important. The current curfew time is 22:30hrs to 04:00hrs. Persons with symptoms of COVID-19 are asked to call the COVID-19 hotline numbers: 231-1166; 226-7480; or 180/181 for assistance.
