A MAN, on Friday, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court accused of stealing a woman’s vehicle shortly after she had exited to open her gate. Omar Francis pleaded guilty to the simple larceny charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Leron Daly. He was remanded to prison and sentencing deferred to March 15.

The charge states that Francis, on March 8, 2021, at Ganges Street, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, stole one Toyota 4Runner motor vehicle valued at $4.7M, the property of Joan Mars.

According to the prosecution, on the day in question at about 23:00 hours, Mars arrived home. She exited her vehicle leaving the engine on to open her gate. While in the process of opening her gate, Francis entered the vehicle and drove away. After realizing that the vehicle was stolen, Mars gave chase in a taxi.

Francis drove through several areas in an attempt to escape, but ended up in the western drain infront of Congress Place. Francis hurriedly exited the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Unfortunately for him, he was apprehended by public spirited citizens. Subsequently, he was arrested and told of the allegation. He was cautioned and he admitted that he had stolen the vehicle.
