FORMER International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-featherweight World titles holder, Gairy St Clair, is teaming up with the World Boxing League (WBL) to bring a Pay-Per-View event to Guyana, in time for Guyana’s 55th Independence Day celebrations (Wednesday May 26).
St Clair behind his ‘Superhero Fight Night Promotion’ is hoping to collaborate with Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and Ministry of Tourism for the event, which he says “will put Guyana on the world stage.”

Based in Australia, the 46-year-old St Clair, who made pro debut in 1994 in a win against Nigel Boston at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, told Chronicle Sport that “the card is intended to interest Guyanese from New York, Miami, Toronto and London; pay-per-view is also intended in these areas.”
According to St Clair, Elton Dharry and Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques will be featured in the main bout and main supporting bout respectively, adding “this card is a Pro/Amp card that will bring together boxers from the Caribbean, Central America and Latin America.”

“Guyana will be a force to be reckoned with once again (and) our promotion group promises to use our technocrats in boxing to bring Guyana gold at the Olympics,” St Clair said.
St Clair pointed out that “this promotion will adopt a Guyanese community after each event held. We will foster these communities to participate in returning glory to the rural areas and where talent is spotted. This promotional group intends to continuously promote sports and cultural events.”
St Clair is known as one of the finest boxers Guyana has ever produced, more so in the featherweight division.

He wrapped up his career with four consecutive wins with the last being on June 29, 2013, with a Unanimous Decision victory over Roberto Oyan in Australia, putting his record at 45 wins (18 knockouts), 12 defeats and two draws.

St Clair became Guyana’s fourth world boxing champion – after Andrew Lewis, Wayne Braithwaite and Vivian Harris – when he defeated South African Cassius Baloyi on a unanimous decision in South Africa in July 2006.

He held the crown for only three months, losing his first title defence to South African Malcolm Klassen.
