FIFTY FIVE-YEAR-OLD Collin Joseph of Charity Back Street, was, on Friday, charged for assaulting an elderly woman at Charity Waterfront.
He made his first appearance before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court and was granted $10, 000 bail after pleading not guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that, on February 17, at Charity Waterfront, he assaulted 79-year-old Rochel Esther Cuvijie.
Cuvijie popularly known as “Queen Esther” had told police that she was beaten by the coconut vendor because she supports the leaders of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).

For years, she has been wearing former President Bharrat Jagdeo’s picture as a badge on her clothing. Since the new government took office she has added the images of President Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Mark Phillips.
The elderly woman is currently living at the Amerindian Hostel at Charity after being homeless for many years. She was given that opportunity when President Ali took office.
Prime Minister’s Representative, Arnold Adams, who accompanied the woman to the court said he was dissatisfied with the way in which the magistrate handled the matter, noting that the elder was badly beaten.
Also accompanying her were PPP/C RDC councillors, Feona Sookdeo, Melrose Henry, and Verina Rasheed.
Joseph is expected to make his second court appearance at the Charity Magistrate’s Court on February 22.
