ALVIN Calder, called “Cheebu” or “CD,” was on Tuesday found guilty of unlawfully killing a man during a brawl at White Water Landing, Mahdia, in 2007.
Calder, formerly of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was on trial at the Essequibo High Court before Justice Gino Persaud.
On Tuesday, the jury after deliberating for almost two hours returned a guilty verdict for manslaughter. Calder will remain on remand until March 9 when he is expected to be sentenced.
Last month, Calder was indicted for manslaughter and his trial commenced before a 12-member jury. He had denied that, on April 12, 2007, at White Water Landing, Mahdia, he killed Joseph Willie. The Guyana Chronicle had reported that Calder told police that Willie owed him money and was refusing to honour his debt. On the day in question, the men were involved in an argument over the outstanding money. It was alleged that Willie, who was armed with a cutlass, confronted Calder. However, Calder ran away and fired a shot in Willie’s direction. Willie was hit and later succumbed to his injuries. Calder was subsequently arrested in Georgetown.
