RAPE accused Enfield Prince will have to be retried after a 12-member jury failed to reach a verdict on Monday.
Prince, an ex-police officer, is on trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Sexual Offences Court of the High Court in Georgetown, for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl on January 23, 2015 at Sophia.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was represented by Attorney-at-law Latchmie Rahamat. The state was represented by prosecutors Nafeeza Baig and Sarah Martin.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict for the indictment which resulted in Prince having to be retried at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes and will remain on bail.

According to reports, on the day in question the victim and her friend were sent away from school and subsequently went to a restaurant and bar at a Georgetown location.

It is alleged that the friend borrowed the victim’s cellphone and made a call to her boyfriend, who is a taxi driver.
He came in his motorcar and they went to Sophia, where at the time the victim was of the impression that she was going to her friend’s residence.
However, the driver of the car took the girls to Prince’s home in Sophia instead. It is alleged that Prince and the taxi-driver took the victim into a bedroom and raped her.

A few minutes later police ranks and welfare officers arrived at Prince’s residence and rescued the girl. It is alleged that Prince verbally abused the officials and left on his police motorcycle while the taxi-driver escaped.
The girls were then taken to the Turkeyen Police Station.
Prince was later arrested and charged.
