GLENFORD Corlette could be a dark horse in the National Closed Chess Championship after having registered two wins in two rounds at the National Stadium.
Although Corlette’s road to winning the 2020 event (postponed from last year) is difficult, he is currently tied with former champion FIDE Master Anthony Drayton on two points, but having played a game less. He is, however, yet to face the big three of the final – Drayton, Taffin Khan and Wendell Meusa.
His first-round clash with Meusa which was originally scheduled for last Saturday and pushed to Tuesday afternoon, will now be held on Saturday morning.

Corlette was able to stop 2020 Rapid and Blitz Senior National Champion Davion Mars in Round Three on Sunday and Rai Sharma in a postponed Round Two clash on Tuesday morning.
In his latest victory, Corlette noted, “Mr Sharma playing the white pieces started off with simple blunders of pawns in less than five moves, allowing me to gain an advantage very early. Our game lasted 44 moves. Improving on openings will greatly improve his game.”
In Round Four, Corlette should fancy his changes against Errol Tiwari and his battle with Loris Nathoo (Round Seven) could go either way, but defeating Meusa, Drayton (Round Five) or Khan (Round Six) would be a difficult task. After having defeated defending champion Drayton, Khan has the advantage, but the final is still too close to call.
