Tricia Fiedtkou to chair GOA’s first Women in Sport Commission

THE Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), yesterday announced the appointment of its Women in Sport Commission, which will be chaired by former National hockey player Tricia Fiedtkou.
The Commission will also include National tennis champion Cristy Campbell, physical education teacher Onefa George, Banker Emily Ramdhani, Olympian Britney Van Lange, Powerlifting champion Runita White, and swimming coach Tatiana Woodroffe. According to a release from GOA, “The objective of the Commission is in keeping with that of Panam Sports – To ensure the constant growth of women in both sport and leadership.” “Some of the work will involve facilitating connections between potential players and the National associations/clubs, raising awareness of gender equality, sexual harassment in sport and anti-doping,” the GOA said. professional, independent and accomplished women and we will do our best to create a strong base to empower our girls and women for the future.”

The first engagement for the newly-established Commission will be a Women in Sports Leadership workshop, scheduled for a date and month in 2021 to be announced by the body.
On November 16, 2020, the GOA finally signed onto the “Brighton Plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women & Sport” which has been in existence since May of 1994.
Guyana will join 280 delegates from 82 countries representing governmental and non-governmental organisations, national Olympic committees, international and national sport federations and educational and research institutions, endorsed the Brighton Declaration, which provided the principles to guide the action intended to increase the involvement of women in sport at all levels and in all functions and roles.
