AN accident on the Number 8 public road on the West Coast of Berbice, Friday night, resulted in the death of pedal cyclist, 21-year-old Shemar Nathaniel Nurse.
Police Headquarters, in a statement, noted that a hire car, driven by a 48-year-old male of Liverpool, Corentyne, Berbice, collided with Nurse about 19:30hrs; enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding east along the northern side of the road, while Nurse was proceeding west along the southern side.

The driver of the car claimed that Nurse, who was riding behind a motor lorry, made a sudden right turn from the northern to the southern side of the road.
“The driver on seeing this, pulled further north to avoid a collision but, despite his effort, the right side front portion of the car collided with the pedal cyclist,” the police report noted.

Police said Nurse landed on the bonnet of the car, then onto the front windscreen and subsequently fell on the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by public spirited persons and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver, who tested negative for alcohol, is in police custody as the investigation continues.
