Duo fined $50,000 each for police assault, obstruction

A MAN and a woman, who assaulted a traffic cop during his attempt to arrest their driver, on Tuesday, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and were each fined $50, 000 after pleading guilty to two charges.

Albert Grant and Paulette Grant stood before Magistrate Leron Daly and admitted that they, on November 5, 2020, at Lombard and Hadfield Streets, assaulted Constable Timothy Cummings during the execution of his duties. They also admitted that, on the same day, and at the said location, they obstructed Cummings from executing his duties.

According to the facts, Cummings and Constable Giles who were dressed in police uniform, and on duty, attempted to arrest Keron Joseph, a Staff Sergeant of the Guyana Defence Force. The duo intervened, thereby hindering Constable Cummings from executing his duties. It is alleged that an enraged Albert Grant pushed the policeman into a bus while Paulette pushed his face with her hand. The matter was reported and the two were arrested for the offences committed.

Magistrate Daly, after recording the guilty pleas ordered that they each pay a fine of $30, 000 or spend two months in prison for the assault of a peace officer and $20, 000 or two months in prison for obstructing a peace officer.
