A 26-year-old woman tragically lost her life on Sunday after the motorcycle she was on crashed into a steel rail on the Seawell Public Road, Berbice.
Dead is Radha Shivcharran, of Lot 86 Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to reports, at approximately 10:45 hrs, Shivcharran was the pillion rider on motorcycle bearing registration number CK 4094, which was proceeding west along the southern carriageway at a fast rate of speed. While negotiating a left bend in the road, the driver, who has been identified as 36-year-old Kenny Teakadharry of Albion, lost control and collided with a steel rail on the northern side of the road.
As a result of the collision, Teakadharry and Shivcharran were flung from the motorcycle onto the roadway.
Teakadharry sustained a broken right foot, while Shivcharran sustained severe injuries, and was bleeding from the neck.
They were picked up and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where Shivcharran was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to Shivcharran’s mother, Nandranie Shivcharran, when her daughter left home that day, she did not indicate where she was going.
About half an hour after she’d left, she received a message saying that her daughter was involved in an accident.
The woman said that based on information she received, the driver of the motorcycle was attempting to overtake a canter at the time of the accident. There are also reports that he was racing with another motorcycle.
Besides her mother, the young woman also leaves to mourn a nine-year-old child.
Police are currently investigating the accident.
