TORONTO, Canada – Teenager Matthew Nandu’s purple patch with the bat continued last weekend with the 17-year-old slamming a brilliant century last Saturday and following up with an unbeaten half-century the following day.
Playing for Kaieteur in the Brampton-Etobicoke & District Cricket League (BEDCL), the left-handed opener blasted nine fours and a six off 115 balls, reaching 126 as his team reached a formidable 337 for six in their allotted 50 overs.
Another teenager, Roy Singh was also in masterful form, his unbeaten 107 being studded with 10 fours off a mere 87 deliveries as he and Nandu pulverised the Canadian Eagles attack which saw the opposition using some 10 bowlers.
Zoahib Anis, who bowled his full quota of overs, was the best bowler on show, bagging an impressive three for 41.
Canadian Eagles were never up to the task, reaching 232 for six when their 50 overs expired with Anis, batted at number six, crowning a fine all-round performance with an unbeaten 69 which included four fours and three sixes. Opener Malkeet Singh was also among the runs, hitting 61 (five fours).
Leg-spinner Jonhatan Singh (two for 24), and Ashtan Deosammy (two for 25) were the top wicket-takers.
On Sunday, Nandu turned his attention to the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) where Kaieteur International B made light work of United Titans in their First Division fixture, played at the Ellesmere ground, Scarborough.
After skittling out their opponents for a paltry 109 in 24.3 overs, Kaieteur International B reached the target comfortably in 23.1 overs with Nandu unbeaten on 57 from 65 delivers when victory was achieved. His knock included six fours, Navin Nauth supported with 27.
Mohamed Chaviwala was United Titan’s top-scorer with 23 after they were rocked by 15-year-old fast-medium bowler Nigel Ramsaroop who finished with an impressive four for 26 from eight overs.
Arjuna Sukhoo grabbed three for 11 from 2.3 overs while Trevor Jerrick took two for 40 from his 10-over spell. (Frederick Halley)
