ONE person was rendered homeless after a fire of unknown origin completely destroyed her two-storey wooden house at Lancaster Village, East Berbice, Corentyne. A neighbour’s house also suffered extensive damage to the walls, beds and furniture.

The fire, which started at around 19:30 hrs, quickly swept through the house, and, within minutes, it ( the house ) was completely destroyed.

The owner of the house, who was identified as “Zallymoon”, managed to escape the burning building and was comforted by neighbours.

Fire tenders from the Rose Hall Fire Station responded promptly to the scene, and, while they did not save the first building, they managed to contain the blaze from engulfing the neighbour’s house.

Speaking with Guyana Chronicle, Chandrawattie Naul, the caretaker for the second building, said she was alerted about the fire by a neighbour.

She explained that, by the time the fire service responded, the fire had already spread to the side of the house.

“I rush over and look to find the keys to open the house because the heat was intense and was making a popping sound. The mattresses, bed and the entire wall was damaged,” she related. Up to press time, the police and utility workers and firefighters were still at the scene.
